Those Who Served
An evening of inspiring tales of service and sacrifice made by the men and women of Porlock and the Vale during the First World War. The talk complemented the project being undertaken by the museum with the aid of a The Carriers for Causes scheme grant, which told the stories not only of those men who died but also registered the names of every man and women who served, in whatever capacity. The project marks the one hundredth anniversary of the end of the war.
More than 350 local men fought in all the theatres of the war; in the trenches of France and Flanders, in the disastrous Gallipoli campaign, in the Middle East, and in India; at home, scores of women performed vital tasks, some training to nurse the long-term wounded, others sending aid packages or helping to bring in the harvests.
